The A-word, we have been told, unfairly singles out the Jewish state and its use is perhaps\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jpost.com\/Opinion\/Op-Ed-Contributors\/Israeli-Apartheid-the-new-form-of-anti-Semitism-343649\" target=\"_blank\">even anti-Semitic<\/a>. Such declarations can have a powerful silencing effect.<\/p>\n<p>However, in 2002 Archbishop Desmond Tutu\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2002\/apr\/29\/comment\" target=\"_blank\">broke the taboo<\/a>, writing in the British newspaper The Guardian that \u201cthe humiliation of Palestinians at checkpoints and roadblocks\u201d <strong>reminded him \u201cof what happened to us black people in South Africa.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Four years later Jimmy Carter committed a similar indelicacy with the very title of his bestseller, \u201cPalestine: Peace Not Apartheid.\u201d A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=7004473\" target=\"_blank\">wave of condemnation<\/a>\u00a0of the former president followed. \u201cHe appears to be giving\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/jsource\/reviews\/carter.html\" target=\"_blank\">aid and comfort<\/a>\u00a0to the new anti-Semites,\u201d wrote a reviewer for the Jewish Virtual Library.<\/p>\n<p>For the most part, in the mainstream U.S. press at least, the decorum that forbids use of the A-word remains in place.
